Hāwea Greenwaste Centre Report - AGM 2021

Community Update Oct 2021

We have had another busy year at the Greenwaste Centre. The fees collected are a major funding source for HCA to provide for community projects and needs.

The centre was closed during COVID lockdown at level 3. Under level 2 we were able to open on Saturdays only. However on Oct 6th we were informed by QLDC that we are now able to open each day, so residents can get the keys from Hāwea Store and Kitchen.

A plea to return the keys promptly.

  1. Hāwea Green Waste Charges – the cheapest around

Currently it costs Hāwea citizens only $5.00 to leave a trailer load of waste at the Centre. These charges have not been raised for Hāwea citizens since the Centre was opened some twenty years ago. Accordingly there will be modest increases taking effect on Nov 1 for utes ($7) and regular trailer ($7) large trailer ($15). This has been widely advertised.

  2. Operations Team

In the course of a year thousands of vehicles enter the Centre to get rid of green waste. Helping keep the Centre safe, efficient and accessible is a seven-person Operations Team – all volunteers. They keep a close eye on the Centre with hardly a day going by that at least one of the Team is at the Centre responding quickly to day-to-day problems. They are: John McCone, Owen Ford, Bruce Horrell, John Osborne, Paul Cunningham, Dennis Hughes and Laura Solbak

  3. Hamish and Erica Mackay and the Hāwea Store & Kitchen Team

For many years now Hāwea citizens have been able to get a Green Waste key from the Hāwea Store & Kitchen.  We thank Hamish and Erica and their staff for continuing to issue the Centre keys and collecting the money.

  4. Saturday Afternoon ‘Community Open Session’ volunteers

Having an ‘Open Session’ between 1.00 & 3.00pm each Saturday has become a local tradition.  The Centre entrance gate is open and volunteers are there to assist local users leave their green waste and take mulch for their garden. Thanks to Graeme Ballantyne for organizing and co coordinating the roster of volunteers. We are grateful to the volunteers who willingly give up a Saturday afternoon.

I would like to express my very sincere thanks and gratitude to the Greenwaste Ops team and Graeme and his merry band of volunteers. We are most fortunate to have the Greenwaste Centre available for our community.

Thank you

Ngā mihi

Laura Solbak
