Gunnera Outbreak at Lake Hāwea

Gunnera (Gunnera tinctoria, or Wild Rhubarb) is an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act 1991, being on the National Pest Plant Accord List (MAF Biosecurity Authority 2001). It has the potential to spread dramatically in the local Hāwea environment, and has now been found on the west shore of the lake, 200m south of Glen Dene Homestead on cliffs and talus slopes (accessible by boat).

It’s worth our community being able to recognise this weed and understand the importance of why it shouldn’t be planted in the area. If you do find this weed, please contact the Guardians of Lake Hāwea.
