Aurora Public Notice: Planned Electricity Outages + Community Support, 1st December 2021

Update from Aurora Energy 26/11/21

Public Notice: Upcoming power outage on Wednesday 1 December and back-up day

Good afternoon,

Last week you will have received a letter from Aurora Energy providing some context on the power outage on Wednesday 1 December.  You will have also received an official notification from your retailer.

To clarify, there is only one power outage scheduled for this work on Wednesday 1 December.

If for any reason the work cannot go ahead on the Wednesday as planned, we will move the work and power outage to the back-up day on Thursday 2 December.

If the work proceeds as planned on the 1st, then you can expect a cancellation from your retailer for the back-up day.

We will update you again on Tuesday 30 November directly.

This outage impacts a whole area, so we have organised some additional community support in both Lake Hāwea and Makarora.  Please find the details in the original customer letter attached.

Please contact us on 0800 22 00 05 or send us an enquiry at www.auroraenergy.co.nz if you have any questions.

Public update from Aurora Energy regarding upcoming work on Wed 1 December 2021

Aurora Energy have a large programme of work to replace sections of the electricity network that supplies Albert Town, Camp Hill, Hāwea Flat, Lake Hāwea and Makarora.

They have bundled the work together and engaged multiple contractors for one coordinated project day on Wednesday 1 December. By bundling their work programmes by area, they can reduce the number of planned outages for customers.

They have organised for Lake Hāwea Community Centre to be generated on this day. The following services will be available on Wed 1 Dec when the power is off: toilets, coffee/ tea, access to the hot water – including fridges for food storage or medicine, WIFI, charging options for phones/ devices. The Community Centre will also be selling lunch packs from 12 – 2pm to fundraise, these will start from $5.

They will also be generating the Makarora Country Café so it will be open from 8.30am – 4.30pm. They are also offering the following for locals: toilets and water facilities or offer to charge phones or devices.

A customer letter was sent by email or post last week – which includes a breakdown of all the work to be completed www.shorturl.at/biGLO

There will also be some customers in parts of Lake Hāwea and Makarora that will be impacted by further work in December.

If you have any questions call us on 0800 22 00 05 or email us: www.auroraenergy.co.nz/contact/send-enquiry/

Please remember:

  • Your water supply may be impacted by these outages, and there are facilities available at  Lake Hāwea Community Centre if you need

  • Do you know anyone in the community who is medically dependent? Please check in on your  neighbours and make sure they are prepared

  • There will be an increase in the number of vehicles in the area and traffic management in  place over the week from the 29th November. Please obey all traffic management signs and  instructions

Further info and Back Up Day

The above work will require a power outage on Wednesday 1 December from 8am – 6pm. It can take time to isolate and restore power safely to a large number of customers, therefore there will be a staged approach to turning the power off and back on. Aurora Energy have also scheduled a backup day on Thursday 2 December if work cannot go ahead on the 1st as planned. You will have also received a power outage notification from your retailer for this day, and you can disregard this notification if the power outage goes ahead on the 1st.

Other upcoming outages

In addition to the 1st of December, there will be some other outages required for the Lake Hāwea township reconductoring project which will impact a smaller pool of customers sporadically over three-week period (3 – 21 December).

This section of work is the section highlighted in pink (2-10) in the map below.  This is part of the work deferred for the undergrounding discussions and includes:

The blue line is also up for renewal, however this crosses over with the section that is up for undergrounding discussion. This will not be completed this year.

Customers impacted by this work have received a tailored letter foreshadowing the additional work (link to letter example).  This has been sent by email (if there is an email attached to their retailer account) or by post.
